Why Genealogists Can’t Get Birth Certificates in Jersey City, NJ

Due to illegal activities years ago by employees of the Hudson County Clerk’s office, Jersey City natives cannot obtain copies of their own birth certificates from that office. Genealogists also cannot obtain birth certificate copies for their ancestors or other relatives.

Details may be found in an article by Daniel Klein in the NJ.com web site at: http://bit.ly/2CYyr6E.

It is still not clear to me, but it appears that folks impacted by this situation can still get their birth certificates from the State??? Is that right?? If so, it would appear to be a minor inconvenience.

This is actually old news that is resurfacing. I did not want to make a 4 hour round trip to Trenton for a replacement birth certificate so I ordered it through Checkpoint and had to pay around $20. Was not an easy task back then because of the backlog. I almost didn’t get my replacement in time to renew my license and needing it for a cruise.
