(US) Senators Harris and Carper Introduce Legislation to Ensure Gender Identity Sexual Orientation to 2030 Census

The following announcement was posted to the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS) mailing list by Jan Meisels Allen and is republished here with her permission:

Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) introduced legislation that would require the 2030 US census to add questions about gender identity an sexual orientation. The focuses is to expand data collection so that the LGBTQ community is fully accounted for in government resources.

In addition, the bill entitled, Census Equality Act, would require the American Community Survey to added questions on these topics to the 2020 version. Every year 3.5 million households talk this in-depth questionnaire.

The press release may be seen at:

There are 14 co-sponsors—all Democrats who signed on the bill.

While at the time of this posting no bill narrative was added to the Legislative Pages of Congress, here is a link to the pdf: https://www.harris.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/Census%20Equality%20Act.pdf.

At least this way, when the pogroms start, they won’t have to get the list from Netflix or Amazon…

Soooo… Asking a question about citizenship will inhibit some people from completing the census but asking about sexual orientation won’t??

So if it is the Census EQUALITY ACT, and we are all equal, then why should they get any more special treatment than anyone else with government programs?

You mean the kind of special treatment that allows for employers to fire someone who is gay in at least 15 State in the U.S. and it is completely legal??

That announcement required proofreading before publication. It is full of typos!!

This is not about equality or undercounting. Its about getting more money allocated to their areas. This is ridiculous!

So Congress declines to fix out immigration system, but has ample time to hold hearings, etc leading to legislation to “interfere” with the Census Bureau’s preparations for an enumeration that will be completed in less than two years. Congress = clueless.

There are males and there are females; all nature, that I’m aware of, attests to that fact. Looks like the legislators promoting this proposal may have too much time on their hands!

Not entirely sure of your point.
I believe every federal census — from 1790 to 2010 — has collected data on sex, M or F. Even on people counted as three fifths of a person.
